Embroidered Fall Top and Last Chance Giveaway!

Happy Fall, Y’all!

It’s always so hard for me to say goodbye to my favorite season of the year in exchange for falling leaves, pumpkins and holiday madness. I needed a little pick-me-up after trading my white jeans for black pants, and my new top with machine embroidery did the trick.

There is a reason I’m loving machine embroidery  ….  just picture my top without it. Whether I’m seeking a hint of color or looking for some drama, I find it one of the easiest methods to embellish clothing.

Since Fall does not mean cooler temperatures in the South just yet, I wasn’t ready for heavier fabrics. I wanted to sew a festive warm-weather transition top and I believe embroidery was the answer.

My pattern is McCall’s 7543, a pattern worth sewing more than once (my previous version is here).

The two piece sleeve offers a great opportunity for embroidery embellishment, so I put the petal to the metal and embroidered both sides of the sleeves with a mirrored image design.

The floral embroidery motif is from the Pfaff Embroidery Collection , a collection of designs included with the machine. Below is a snapshot of the process. I stitched the sleeves’ upper seams together before starting the embroidery to ensure accurate design placement. After I ‘hooped’ the fabric with a soft tear away stabilizer and placed the design,

The stitching in this design is beautiful and can be seen in detail by clicking on the photo below. My thread is Coats and Clark Trilobal Embroidery Thread in black.

I embroidered the just the sleeves so I could easily accessorize the top.

I sewed View B but added approximately four inches to the length, and the fabric is poplin from the stash. French seams were used on the sleeve and side seams. I finished the armscye seams on the serger.

While I preferred the crisp contrast of black and white for my top, the sky is the limit at Coats and Clark. for the Trilobal Embroidery Thread is offered in 122 colors….  just imagine… pink embroidery on navy, emerald on black, orange on pink, white on yellow, yellow on gray….yikes 🙂
