Fabric Covered Hangers

Hang it Up with Fabric Covered Hangers.

Why use boring clothes hangers when you can create something fun to add pizzazz to your closet? Those mundane wire or plastic hangers can be easily transformed with colorful fabrics to add a spark to your early-morning clothing selection process.

To make a fabric covered  hanger:

  1. Trace around the hanger shape (up to the neck base) and add 3/8″ to all edges for seam allowances. Use this tracing to create your pattern piece on pattern tracing cloth or paper.
  2. Cut two pieces of fabric in the shape of your pattern. If you want to embellish the hanger with lace, ribbon, rickrack or other trim, stitch it in place on the fabric pieces as desired.
  3. With right sides together, sew the side angles of the hanger shape, leaving the neck area unstitched. Turn the cover right side out and press the edges. On the neck and lower edges, press under 3/8″ seam allowance.
  4. Insert the hanger through the lower portion of the cover. Pin together the pressed-under edges and hand stitch closed. When covering metal hangers, the lower edge can be fused closed using fusible web tape, as the iron heat won’t damage the hanger.
  5. Tie a ribbon around the hanger neck to finish or wrap the hook area with ribbon.

TIP: Colorful scarves can also be used for fabric covered hangers—just place the border patterning as desired.
