Baby Sleeping Bag

When my bigs were littles, our baby sleeping bag was the piece of practical baby gear we used more than anything else we owned. I was thrilled to find this BurdaStyle version with a free PDF pattern from their Cutie Pie Collection. Burda rates it as novice level, so even a sewing newbie can make this for a gift or their own wee one. Closed, it finishes at about 20” x 15.75” and you could easily change the size if needed. You’ll be drafting the pattern from the measurements given, so changing the size should be easy – up for a larger baby, down for a premie. Two cotton prints, one for the outside, one for the lining, batting, bias tape, snaps, three large buttons and Coats Dual Duty XP thread are just about all you’ll need. You’re going to love this! Perfect Burp Cloths

Sometimes you need practical baby gear and you just can’t find exactly what you want. This was the case with a friend of Deby of the So Sew Easy blog who designed these Perfect Burp Cloths to her friend’s specifications. She even included a bit of redesign to improve what they found ready made! Following Deby’s free Craftsy pattern, you can make a stack of Perfect Burp Cloths quickly and keep them on hand for baby gifts. A fat quarter of quality cotton plus a fat quarter of terry cloth fabric will make three Burp Cloths, so a yard of each would result in a nice dozen or so. And, when the burping days are over, they make fabulous dust cloths! Click here for the link to Deby’s free Craftsy download.

Car Seat Cover

If you’re looking for really super-easy and practical baby gear, the lovely Car Seat Cover designed by Chelsea of the Life With My LIttles blog is just what you need! Her wonderful step by step instructions make this easy for every sewist. Just a yard of two fabrics, a bit of strap fabric, hook-and-loop tape and thread make this a very economical project, too. Chelsea couldn’t find exactly what she wanted so, in the true spirit of DIY, she designed her own! The straps keep the cover secure, so it stays where it’s needed in wind or rain. She cleverly includes a link to a quilted cover, too, if you’d rather make that style.  I love her last step: “Step back and admire your beautiful, new, handmade car seat cover!!!” Because, that’s what we should always do with our makes! Changing Pad With Diaper and Wipes Storage

Our inventive friend, Chelsea of Life With My Littles, also designed another fabulous piece of practical baby gear every Mom or Grandmom will love. It’s a darling changing pad that rolls up and stores diapers and wipes inside. Perfect for stashing in the car or grabbing as you unexpectedly head out the door. You know how those days can be! The Terry Cloth liner makes this comfy for baby and Chelsea’s clear steps make the pad another easy-to-sew project.  She gives great instructions on exactly how to print and assemble her free PDF pattern and very specific measurements for the changing pad pieces. A little bit of sewing time will end with a beautiful, economical, washable changing pad. It may become your signature Baby Shower gift! Click here for Chelsea’s great tutorial on her blog
